Formula One Singtel Singapore Grand Prix
Big names including Linkin Park, Rick Astley, Daddy G and 3D from Massive Attack and the 19-year old Filipino singer and YouTube sensation, Charice, are confirmed to perform at the event, which looks as though it is going to be one weekend to remember.
As Formula One’s only night race, the Singapore Grand Prix is always one to look forward to, and lends itself to a grand variety of shows and entertainment. This year the creators are aiming for a spectacular world festival featuring international headliners, stunning theatrical-visual productions, retro disco showcases, and electrifying parades, all in one fully loaded circuit park.
So not only will there be over ten hours of thrilling race action, there will also be more than 300 entertainers that will perform everything from rock to musicals, Bollywood, dance and fire-eaters. It is safe to say there is something for every taste, young or old.
Topping the line-up are twice Grammy Award-winning rock band, Linkin Park, who will showcase an exclusive multi-media experience alongside hits from their new album, ‘A Thousand Suns’, on the Padang main stage on race day. Fans will even get a chance to get up-close to their idols, being able to get into the ‘Fan Zone’ right next to the stage by collecting a wristband at the stage front. Wristbands are limited to 2,000 a day on a first-come-first-served basis. Touches like these really make the Singapore Grand Prix unique, not only is it an exciting race there are also lots of other opportunities.
Joining the headliners assembly, is Glee starlet and YouTube sensation, Charice whose amazing voice has seen her star alongside big names such as Celine Dion. Her two singles have been hugely successful, with her second single in 2010, Pyramid, featuring rapper Iyaz; charting within the top‐40 in a number of countries. That same year, she released her first self‐titled studio album, which entered the Billboard 200 at number 8, making her the first Asian and Filipino singer in history to land in the chart’s Top 10 list. Have a look at our interview with Charice about the Singapore Grand Prix over the page. She will be performing on the Padang Stage on the Friday and the Village Stage on the Saturday of the event.
Shaggy, is yet another enormous star that is set to grace the Singaporean stage. The ‘Wasn’t Me’ star will be on the Esplanade Outdoor Theatre on the Saturday and the Village stage on the Sunday. Other events include a DJ set by experimental trip hop prodigies, Daddy G and 3D from Massive Attack, ‘Together Forever’ singer Rick Astley and performances from the Bollywood Express.
If you think you spot Marilyn Monroe at the event, then do not worry, you won’t be seeing things. Suzie Kennedy, an unbelievably realistic Marilyn look-alike who has starred in many films and adverts as the star, will be walking around the track providing it with some gorgeous glamour.
If you after a bit of a laugh then check out Forbidden Broadway, who do spoofs of contemporary Broadway shows from Phantom of the Opera to Hairspray. Visual arts also come alive at the Singapore Grand Prix - Zone 1 and Premier Walkabout ticket holders can take a surreal walk through the Milky Way, as the F1 Village near Gate 1 will be transformed by recreations of planets based on actual NASA imagery. The La Terra al Centro dell Universo is a visual spectacle specially commissioned for the Singapore night race, with the largest planet hovering at 5-metres tall.
More events include a Venetian Festival, an ‘Ocean Symphony’ and a routine by kinetic artist, Brian Olsen, who puts art into motion by splashing paint onto a blank canvas to create life-size portraits. Slack Taxi Bouncers will also be bouncing around the event. With a frenzy of tumbling, flips, headstands and handstands, these crazy performers create lots of energy and laughs. The Bouncers have become one of Slack Taxi’s most unique and outrageously popular roving performances, creating spectacle and fun wherever they go.
Other roving performers include magicians, percussionists and stilt-walkers that will captivate you as you move from place to place. There are also going to be firework displays and many other jaw-dropping events. For more information visit www.singaporegp.sg.
