Frank Chou is a solid and original talent who own his own studio that helps people with furniture design, project management, brand marketing and PR tasks, also shares the industrial resources with different types of enterprises to help them keep on developing. We invited Frank for a short chat.

What’s new in the design industry of China?

Well, China has become the biggest furniture consumer market in the world and extends a great influence on the international industry. The needs of Chinese consumers have a considerable impact on the relevant design trends of products worldwide and contemporary design has no choice but to adapt accordingly to the Chinese lifestyle and aesthetics.

Are Chinese clients also changing? How?

Chinese consumers’ taste and habits have changed dramatically in recent decades as incomes have risen and new products and concepts have entered the China market. It is interesting to see how the fashion industry has been influencing the design industry lately, thanks to exciting creative collaborations between these two worlds.

Clients in China are very discerning and quality-conscious. They have opened up to international aesthetics and lifestyle but retained their own peculiar cultural identity.

How is Asia’s design market different form the European one? And the American one?

The main point is that the Chinese design market and industry are relatively young compared to the European and American ones.

The Chinese furniture industry, for example, has developed only in the last 20 years and there are some large gaps in the local industry. On the contrary, the European market is mature and all aspects of the chain are complete. Europeans still play a crucial role in the process of changing the taste and lifestyle of global consumers.

What are you mostly looking forward in the near future in terms of global design?

We have achieved great results in China, not only in the design field, but in the whole Chinese market. Hence we are now hoping to expand our cooperation, especially with the European market and to collaborate more and more with leading international brands from other continents as well.
