With effect from January 17, 2021, Carlos Tavares was named Stellantis’ Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer. Until March 31, 2014, he was Chairman of the Managing Board of Groupe PSA. He joined the Managing Board of Groupe PSA on January 1, 2014. Carlos Tavares, born in Portugal in 1958, earned a degree from the École Centrale de Paris.
Before joining the Nissan Group in 2004, he held a number of positions inside the Renault Group between 1981 and 2004. Before being named Chief Operating Officer of Renault, a position he held until 2013, Carlos Tavares was appointed Executive Vice President, Chairman of the Management Committee Americas, and President of Nissan North America in 2009. In addition, Carlos Tavares is a member of the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA) board and a director of Airbus Holding S.A.
Tavares took over the duties of Stellantis’ initial CEO on January 16, 2021, following the PSA group and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles merger. Stellantis is a worldwide automaker.
He stated that he hoped to reach 5 billion euros in synergies, particularly in investment, sharing of engines and platforms, and development, during the group’s inaugural news conference on January 19, 2021. Additionally, he stated that he wished to revitalize the most vulnerable companies so they might gain from fresh investments.
The 2021 compensation package for Tavares, which included a base salary of about 19 million euros ($20.5 million), a stock package worth an additional 32 million euros, and long-term compensation of about 25 million euros, was dubbed “shocking” by incumbent President Emmanuel Macron and his rival Marine Le Pen during their campaigns for the 2022 French presidential election.
Tavares’s roots are in Portugal, where he owns a vineyard and a modest vintage-car business, according to PSA’s outgoing Chairman Louis Gallois, who also believes that Tavares will be a powerful neutral arbitrator.
Tavares is the father of three children. Since the age of twenty-two, he has competed in amateur auto races. Carlos has competed in the Rallye Historique de Monte-Carlo. He also collects vintage automobiles and owns a 1966 Porsche 912, a 1976 Alpine A110, and a 1979 Peugeot 504 V6 Coupé. He was a rally driver until the beginning of the 1990s.
