Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) has changed its guard again after five years. Tan Sri Wan Zulkiflee Wan Ariffin’s job as president and group CEO (CEO) of the national oil firm is being taken over by Tengku Muhammad Taufik Tengku Aziz.

In the corporate world, many may know Tengku Taufik as a former PricewaterhouseCoopers Malaysia (PwC Malaysia) partner who replaced Datuk Manharlal Ratila, or Datuk George Ratilal, as Petronas chief financial officer (CFO) in October 2018.

Tengku Muhammad Taufik was Tun Azizan Zainul Abidin’s young executive assistant in the 1980s. Tun Azizan Zainul Abidin is known for laying the solid foundation for Petronas at that time.

Tengku Muhammad Taufik worked for Petronas for several years. But soon after Mohd Hassan handed over power to Tan Sri Shamsul Azhar Abbas, he left to find better opportunities in the business world. Tengku Muhammad Taufik joined SapuraKencana Petroleum Bhd (now known as Sapura Energy Bhd) as CFO between December 2012 and January 2015, and he was with Tanjong plc before that.

Like his immediate predecessor Wan Zul, Tengku Taufik is expected to face challenging tasks ahead, given the current oil glut amid demand disruption due to the Covid-19 pandemic worldwide.

In addition to low oil prices, he will have to find a way to meet the social goals of the national oil company and keep Petronas’ sovereign rating in good shape.

As a progressive energy and solutions partner, Petronas’ home at the heart of motorsport provides a platform for the continuous innovation of their Fluid Technology Solutions, committing thousands of hours to pursue product performance, reliability and efficiency.

Since 2010, Petronas has been the Title and Technical Partner to the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team, providing Fluid Technology Solutions™️ that have powered the team to eight consecutive Constructors’ Championships (2014-2021) and seven consecutive Drivers’ Championships (2014-2020).

Petronas believe that staying determined to forge ahead and surpass expectations requires a special kind of energy: passion. This gives all its employees the drive they need to give its partners the best fluid technology, whether for the racetrack or the road.

It’s the same energy that drives Petronas’ passion for progress and its commitment to supporting progressive technological solutions that will improve the future sustainability of motorsport.

Petronas has revealed that it has appointed Tengku Muhammad Taufik Tengku Aziz as its new president and group chief executive officer (CEO) following the retirement of Tan Sri Wan Zulkiflee Wan Ariffin from the company.
