In 1979, Lammers debuted in Formula One, driving for Shadow and moved to ATS in 1980. He moved to Ensign midway through the season but rejoined ATS for four races in 1981. He joined Theodore in 1982. Ten years later, he returned to Formula One for the final two races of the 1992 season.

He won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1988 and later participated in the race with his team Racing for Holland. He was also the seatholder of the Dutch A1 Grand Prix team.

Jan Lammers grew up in Zandvoort and has visited the circuit since childhood. The sporting director of the F1 Dutch Grand Prix can hardly wait for the race event in his home country. “I am immensely proud that, following the last race in 1985, we can announce the return of Formula 1 to the Netherlands. A fantastic event in the year in which Formula 1 is celebrating its 70th anniversary. As the sporting director, but first and foremost as a race fan, I look forward to this moment. Something we in The Netherlands can be proud of and that we can share with the rest of the world! Surely this is something nobody will want to miss.”

On 14 May 2019, the Dutch Grand Prix at the Zandvoort track was announced for the 2020 Formula One calendar. In March 2020, the event’s return was postponed in response to the COVID-19 pandemic; it was later cancelled altogether, with the event’s return slated for 2021, where home favourite Max Verstappen took the victory. The Dutch Grand Prix is contracted to be held at Zandvoort till 2025.

Zandvoort is very popular among tourists. The resort attracts at least five million one-day visitors annually thanks to its beautiful beaches and surroundings. On top of that, Zandvoort is close to Amsterdam, the best-visited city in the Netherlands.
