Introduction
Mercedes’ George Russell claimed a somewhat unexpected victory in the 2024 Formula 1 Austrian Grand Prix after a hugely dramatic end to the race. Max Verstappen and Lando Norris collided in the battle for the lead, dropping Verstappen down the order and forcing Norris to retire.

While Verstappen had made a strong start from pole position to hold P1 for much of the race, a thrilling duel with McLaren driver Norris unfolded when both made their final pit stops on Lap 52 of 71, where Red Bull suffered a rare slower stop due to an issue with the left rear wheel.
With the gap between them at less than two seconds, Norris was hot on his rival’s tail and made more than one attempt to snatch P1. But it all came to a head on Lap 64 when the pair made contact, causing both to limp back to the pits with punctures.
This allowed Russell – who had long been running in third – to sweep through to take the lead in the Mercedes, which he held until the chequered flag to claim the second race win of his F1 career.
[bsa_pro_ad_space id=41]In what may have been a small consolation for McLaren, Oscar Piastri took P2 ahead of the lead Ferrari of Carlos Sainz in third. There was then a sizeable gap back to the Silver Arrows machine of Lewis Hamilton in fourth, while Verstappen crossed the line in fifth, a position he kept despite being handed a 10-second penalty for the incident with Norris.
Nico Hulkenberg and Kevin Magnussen marked a strong performance for Haas by taking sixth and eighth, respectively. Sergio Perez’s Red Bull was sandwiched between them in seventh. Daniel Ricciardo claimed two points for RB in the ninth, and Pierre Gasly’s Alpine rounded out the top 10.
It was an eventful day for Charles Leclerc, who recovered from a first-lap incident with Piastri to work his way up to P11 via four pit stops in the Ferrari. Alpine’s Esteban Ocon followed in P12, having earlier enjoyed a close battle with teammate Gasly.
Lance Stroll was the lead Aston Martin in P13 on what proved to be another tough day for the squad, ahead of RB’s Yuki Tsunoda in P14 and the Williams of Alex Albon in P15.
Kick Sauber’s wait for their debut points of 2024 continues, with Valtteri Bottas and Zhou Guanyu crossing the line in 16th and 17th, respectively.
Fernando Alonso set the fastest lap on his final tour but ended the day in P18. Throughout the event, he struggled for pace in the Aston Martin and was penalised for pushing Zhou off the track earlier in the afternoon.
Logan Sargeant was the final classified runner for Williams in 19th, while Norris – carrying a five-second time penalty for exceeding track limits – ultimately retired in the pits following the damage sustained in his clash with Verstappen, ending a day that had been filled with promise in an unhappy fashion.
Mario Isola, Motorsport Director, Pirelli:
When you least expect it, the sparks fly! The first two-thirds of the race were generally linear; it only took a small problem at Verstappen’s second pit stop to bring together on track the two outstanding drivers of this weekend, thus triggering a thrilling on-the-limit duel. It produced an exhilarating finale which, in the end, worked out to the benefit of George Russell, who was therefore able to secure his second-ever Grand Prix win: congratulations to him and Mercedes! Overall, there was a lot of overtaking in this race, some of it spectacular.
From our end, there were no curveballs. The tyres performed exactly as we had anticipated, aligning with our pre-race simulations and the data analysis from Friday and Saturday. Our strategy predictions were largely on point, with the Medium and Hard tyres being the primary choices for the race. The Medium, in particular, showed a slight edge, especially on the more competitive cars. Despite having two sets of Hards at their disposal, the Red Bull duo opted for the C4 for the third stint, a decision influenced by the performance of their rivals in this phase of the race.
On the other hand, the C3, which suffered slightly less from degradation, worked well for those who opted to run a very short first stint on the Medium before exploiting the greater consistency of the white-banded tyres. Thus, they managed to get into the points, as did the Haas pair of Hulkenberg and Magnussen and Ricciardo (Racing Bulls).
The day on the track:
As expected, the most effective strategy was a two-stop: those who did three or more – Verstappen, Leclerc, Alonso and Sargeant – did so for unforeseen circumstances, not by choice. All the drivers lined up on the grid on Medium tyres while starting from the pit lane; Zhou went with the Hard. The C4 and the C3 were the undoubted protagonists of this race, with the C5 only putting in an appearance at the end, used by Verstappen for the last seven laps after his enforced stop and by Alonso, who was trying for the race’s fastest lap, which he did indeed set.
Daniel Ricciardo drove the longest stint of the race, completing a 34-lap third and final stint on the Hard tyre. The prize on Mediums goes to Pierre Gasly, who did 29 laps, and in this case, too, the French Alpine driver did it in his final stint.
What’s next?
This was Pirelli’s busiest weekend of the year, working as sole tyre supplier at the Austrian Grand Prix and the 24 Hours of Spa and Rally Poland. The Formula 1 season continues apace, with the classic British Grand Prix at Silverstone next weekend. Racing around the Northamptonshire track will also be the Formula 2 and Formula 3 cars. That same weekend, there’s another motor racing classic, with the DTM championship round at the Norisring, along with the ADAC GT4, for which, once again this year, Pirelli is the sole supplier. And that’s not all, as Pirelli will also be at the European Rally Championship round in Estonia and Suzuka for the GTWC Asia.

Here are the team-by-team highlights:
Red Bull Racing
Max Verstappen escaped a late clash with 2024 FIA Formula One World Championship title rival Lando Norris to claim fifth place at the 2024 Formula 1 Austrian GP around the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg on Sunday.
[bsa_pro_ad_space id=41]The Dutchman recovered to score 10 points, which extended his title lead over the McLaren driver to 81 points. Oracle Red Bull Racing teammate Sergio Pérez finished in seventh place.
Max Verstappen, Driver, Red Bull Racing
We were battling today, and Lando tried to move around the outside, and then we touched with the rear tyres. It was very hot, so immediately, we had a puncture. From my side, it seemed like a weird move, but we obviously need to review this, and of course, we will talk about it. The shape of the corner also causes these kinds of issues sometimes, and it is never nice to come together. However, this isn’t my main focus, as we need to look at the overall performance today and the difficulties we had with the car. It was very hard to manage the tyres, the first stint was not too bad and I had a fairly comfortable lead, the second stint was difficult; I think we stayed out a bit too long and then there was the issue with the pit stop. The overall Team performance wasn’t what we expected, and the strategy didn’t work well in this case. It was a shame because of the lead that we had. There are definitely a few things we need to improve looking to next week, and hopefully, we can work on the performance, tyres and balance.
Sergio Pérez, Driver, Red Bull Racing:
It is very disappointing to be in this position today. The race started really well, and we had a solid start, but then I picked up some damage on Lap 1, and the car struggled and was sliding, so it was very difficult to fight towards the front. With the damage, I was off balance and made a mistake going into the pitlane and got a five-second time penalty, which hindered us towards the end of the race. We need to look back at a few things and carefully analyse them. The race pace was a question mark today, and I felt we made some really good improvements after yesterday. Overall we lacked performance, it was a very difficult race and one that I struggled a lot in. Next weekend I hope we can have a solid, clean showing, and hopefully will be able to sort all of the problems from this weekend to be able to move forwards as there are still a lot of races left. On to Silverstone.
CHRISTIAN HORNER, CEO and Team Principal
For so much of the race, we had it under control; we had an eight-second lead, and it looked like it was all ok. We lost some time at the pit stop as we had a wheel nut stuck on the left rear, which cut Max’s lead down more than we would have liked, and from there, it was hard racing. Lando exceeded track limits and was going to get a penalty but then there was the contact and that was really frustrating, it was tough racing between those two. We’ve still managed to get some points and extend both Championships, 10 points in the Drivers and 16 in the Constructors. The pace of the car has been very strong this weekend; we have had two poles, Max led the race for all but nine laps, and then the Sprint victory yesterday, so it hasn’t been totally disastrous, but yes, it is still frustrating, we really would have liked the win, but that is racing.
Scuderia Ferrari
The 2024 Formula 1 Austrian Grand Prix is often one of the more exciting races of the season, and so it proved to be today, although the final result was mixed for Scuderia Ferrari HP. On the one hand, one can celebrate a return to the podium, thanks to a third place for Carlos Sainz, who drove a very solid race, while on the other, there’s a great disappointment for Charles Leclerc, who tried to stage an almost impossible recovery following a collision at the start.
[bsa_pro_ad_space id=41]The race. Carlos was passed by Lewis Hamilton for fourth place at the start, but the Englishman soon had to give back the position because he had made the passing move off the track in the run-off area. Charles’ race was immediately compromised when, at turn 1, he was squeezed between Oscar Piastri and Sergio Perez, and he came off as the worst, having to pit to replace a damaged front wing. From then on, Charles pinned his hopes on a Safety Car that never came to let him close up on the field. His pace was the same as Carlos’s, and he only missed out on picking up a point when he finished eleventh. Carlos fought from start to finish in a close battle with George Russell, mostly scrapping for third place. At the most, the Mercedes driver had a five-second advantage, and after the last pit stop, when he rejoined on Hard tyres while Carlos was on Mediums, the gap grew gradually smaller, getting down to under 2 seconds on lap 66, just as out in front, Lando Norris and Max Verstappen collided, with both their cars sustaining damage. That provoked a Virtual Safety Car while debris was cleared off the track, and at the restart, the duel resumed, with Piastri now joining Sainz and Russell, the Australian on much fresher tyres. It meant he could pass the Ferrari for second place behind Russell. It was Carlos’ fifth podium finish of the season, the Scuderia’s tenth, which confirms Carlos’ fourth place in the Drivers’ championship, closing in on Norris and Charles, who came away from this event with just the two points from yesterday’s Sprint race. The team is still second in the Constructors’ standings.
Next stop, Silverstone. The World Championship barely stops for breath as the final race of this summer triple-header, the British Grand Prix, takes place at the historic Silverstone circuit this week.
Carlos Sainz #55
This P3 is a positive result and a good reward for us after the difficult start to the weekend. Yesterday, we worked hard to improve the car after the Sprint and had a better qualifying. Today was an eventful race, and our pace wasn’t bad. We were fighting with Mercedes for a place on the podium. Unfortunately, after the crash at the front, I couldn’t do much to keep the other McLaren behind as they’d been very fast here in Austria. All in all, a podium is a good result, and now we need to focus on ourselves to be able to fight at the front, which is where we want to be. All eyes are on Silverstone.
Charles Leclerc #16
Unfortunately, this was a weekend to forget as nothing went as it should. The collision on the opening lap obviously completely ruined my race. We were hoping for a Safety Car, but it didn’t come, and I lost time behind Lando (Norris) when I had fresh tyres and could have pushed more. The end result was that we couldn’t even score a point. Apart from Carlos’ podium, which brings us a good points haul in the Constructors’, the only positive aspect of the weekend is that we tried various set-up configurations, producing plenty of data for the team, which will be very important for the upcoming races. We will start working hard to put this race behind us tomorrow, starting this weekend at Silverstone.
Frédéric Vasseur – Team Principal
Today’s race gives us mixed feelings as it’s positive to be back on the podium with Carlos, who drove a solid race and brought home good points for the championship, but we didn’t score with Charles, who was involved in a racing incident at the start. So, all in all not a bad weekend even if there’s a bit of frustration as we probably could have done a better job especially at the beginning of it. We made a good step forward from Friday morning onwards, but it’s not enough, and we must continue to push as we need two cars fighting for maximum points at every race. Once again, we need to improve our qualifying pace, as starting nearer the front in such a tight field means having a better chance of finishing at the front, picking up opportunities and staying away from troubles. One final word on this weekend: to see such a close fight for the lead, with drivers pushing one another, eventually ending with an unexpected winner, while there were other equally exciting battles lower down the field, is definitely very good for the popularity of this sport.
Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team
George Russell claimed victory at the 2024 Formula 1 Austrian Grand Prix, with Lewis Hamilton finishing fourth in a race that was slow to the boil; late drama made up for the early stages, with George taking advantage of a clash between Max Verstappen and Lando Norris to win.
[bsa_pro_ad_space id=41]Starting P3 and P5, respectively, George held position at the start, with Lewis passing Carlos Sainz’s Ferrari at turn one. However, the incident was noted because Lewis gained an advantage by running off track, so he gave the position back. While he pushed hard to achieve the position again, floor damage picked up early on, compromising his race and leading to a loss of performance.
Both drivers ran a two-stop strategy, starting on the Medium compound tyre. George took a new Medium compound at his first stop with Lewis the Hard. Lewis was noted for crossing the white line at pit entry, however. That led to a five-second penalty he served at his second stop, as he took the Medium compound tyre and dropped him behind the McLaren of Piastri.
The team’s race looked set to end with George finishing P3 and Lewis P6 before Verstappen and Norris clashed for the lead on lap 64. With both cars suffering damage, it was with an element of good fortune that George cycled through to the lead. He closed out the final few laps without incident to take his second Grand Prix victory and the team’s first since the 2022 São Paulo Grand Prix.
George Russell
Incredible! That’s the only way I can describe it. We had a tough fight early to ensure we held on to P3. That would prove crucial in the end. I saw that Max (Verstappen) and Lando (Norris) had a big battle. We were only just over 10 seconds behind the pair of them, which is really encouraging pace-wise. I knew there was a possibility that they could come together, even if it were only a slim chance. You have to be there at the end to pick up the pieces, and that’s exactly where we were. I am so proud to be back on the podium’s top step.
The team have done an amazing job to get us closer to the fight at the front. We have made so many strides since the start of the season. The last few races have been great; hopefully, more will come. It’s no secret that Max and Lando are ahead of us, but we’re consistently putting ourselves in that third position. It’s an exciting time for us; we’re riding a bit of a wave, and I can’t wait to go to my home race at Silverstone next week and see what we can do there.
Lewis Hamilton
Congratulations to George and the team. Everyone at Brackley and Brixworth really deserves this result. They have worked so hard to bring performance to the car, and we are starting to get closer and closer to the very front. We put in so much effort that getting a result like this is a well-deserved reward for everyone’s efforts.
From my side, it wasn’t the cleanest weekend. Unfortunately, I picked up some damage early on, which compromised my race. We now look ahead to Silverstone. It is always such a special weekend, and I can’t wait to see all the fans there. It is a track that should hopefully suit us a little better than here in Austria, so let’s see what we can do.
Toto Wolff, Team Principal & CEO
It is a great feeling to return to the podium’s top step. It is a fantastic reward for everyone’s hard work and efforts at Brackley and Brixworth. We have taken good steps forward in recent races and are excited about what is still to come. We knew our outright pace today wouldn’t quite be enough to challenge for victory. Therefore, we ensured we maximised our race and could pick up the pieces should anything happen. We enjoyed some good fortune, but it was motor racing.
George did a fantastic job throughout the race to keep himself within touching distance of the front two. It was third place on pace, and we would have been pleased with that as it highlights the progress we continue to make. We did think there could be a chance for more, though, with the battle ahead, and we were able to take advantage of that. Lewis, meanwhile, was unfortunate today. Firstly, he had to give the position back to Carlos Sainz’s Ferrari, and secondly, he picked up floor damage, which caused him to lose his performance. Nevertheless, he fought hard and drove a strong race to take a valuable P4.
We now look forward to Silverstone next week. We are encouraged by our overall performance this weekend at a track that has not normally been a favourite for our cars. Our aim over the next few races is to continue to show progress and aim to get closer to the front.
McLaren Racing
Hear from McLaren Formula 1 drivers Lando Norris, Oscar Piastri, and Team Principal Andrea Stella after the 2024 Formula 1 Austrian Grand Prix.
[bsa_pro_ad_space id=41]Lando holds his position at the start, brushing off a challenge from Russell. Meanwhile, Oscar manages to retain seventh despite contact with Leclerc. Oscar pulls off a daring overtake of Perez around the outside of Turn 6 to take sixth. Lando pulls away from Russell and extends his gap to four seconds but is six behind Verstappen.
Lando switches from Mediums to Hards on Lap 23, returning in second. Oscar follows two laps later, making the same stop and re-joining in sixth. Oscar closes in on Hamilton and moves at Turn 3 to take net-fifth. Lando and Oscar switch to new Mediums within moments of one another on Lap 51 and return in second and fifth. Lando re-joins within striking distance of Verstappen and immediately goes on the attack, nearly passing the Red Bull on Lap 55.
Lando composes himself and makes a second attempt three laps later. He briefly takes the lead but leaves the track and returns the position to Verstappen. Lando and Verstappen continue their battle for first, but they collide and both suffer damage. Lando attempts to carry on but is forced to retire from the pits. Oscar is promoted to third as Verstappen pits for repairs and almost immediately passes Sainz for second. Oscar begins to chase down Russell, who has assumed the race lead, but runs out of time and finishes second, clinching his second podium of the season.
Lando Norris
It was a tough race! The first half was challenging because I didn’t really have the pace, but it improved in the final stint and felt very strong. I made a number of attempts to go for the win, trying to avoid collisions, but frustratingly, I got crashed into by Max, which ended my day early. There was nothing more I could do.
The team did a great job this weekend and gave a very strong race until the contact. It’s unfortunate and hurtful, but it’s time to move on to the next one. I’m looking forward to racing in front of my home fans at Silverstone. We’ll fight for another strong result to finish the triple header on a high.
Oscar Piastri
I know that’s only my fourth podium in F1, but being so close to a win hurts a little! Of course, it’s really good points, and we were very strong in the second half of the race, so overall, I’m happy with a podium in that regard – but when it’s so close at the end, you can’t help but feel disappointed.
We get another go next week at Silverstone. I have always enjoyed the track, and I have good memories of last year’s Grand Prix. It’s the team’s home race; hopefully, we can be at the front again.
Andrea Stella
We came away from this event in Austria with a double podium finish in the Sprint and a podium finish for Oscar in the main race, confirming the team’s trajectory once again. We can now contend for the top positions at every kind of circuit.
There’s quite a lot of confirmation of the strengths in the car performance, the operations, and the whole team working together to bring McLaren to the front of the grid.
At the same time, there’s also quite a bit of frustration because of what happened yesterday with Oscar’s lap deletion and today with Lando and Max’s collision. This meant we could not see this battle going to the Chequered Flag, which would have been quite exciting.
We will use this frustration to become even more determined and motivated, strengthen our strengths, and prepare for the second part of the season, which promises to be quite exciting for the papaya colours.
Aston Martin F1 Team
Following a difficult weekend, Lance finished the 2024 Formula 1 Austrian Grand Prix in P13, while Fernando was classified in P18.
[bsa_pro_ad_space id=41]Fernando began the Austrian Grand Prix in P15, while Lance started in P17. Both opted to begin the Grand Prix on the Medium compound tyre. Fernando was the first to make a pitstop for another set of Mediums, with Lance staying out longer. Both made their second pitstop later in the race for Hard tyres.
Fernando made a third pitstop in the closing laps to swap to the Soft tyre and set the race’s fastest lap. Lance finished the race in P13 and Fernando in P18.
Fernando Alonso
As expected, it was a tough day for us. We didn’t have the pace, so we tried different strategies to mix it up. Then, we had contact with Zhou [Guanyu] when I locked up going into Turn 3. The penalty didn’t really change our result because we were already out of the points. We have our home race next week in Silverstone, and the team is doing everything possible to improve the situation.
Lance Stroll
On the opening lap of the race, I got caught up in some contact but managed to avoid damage. From then on, my afternoon was mainly about managing tyres to make a two-stop strategy work. I made a few overtakes, but we lacked the pace to make much impact on our finishing positions. It’s been a difficult weekend; we’re in a run of races that don’t suit our car, so there’s a lot of work to do.
Mike Krack, Team Principal:
Today’s result reflects our car pace this weekend. We did not give our drivers a car to compete for points. We knew this run of races would be challenging, but we needed to focus on the future and get through this phase. Lance and Fernando battled for every place. Next weekend is our home race at Silverstone in front of our fans and colleagues. We need to get our heads down and improve quickly.
Visa Cash App F1 Team
The Visa Cash App RB duo of Daniel Ricciardo and Yuki Tsunoda finished in ninth and 14th places, respectively, at the 2024 Formula 1 Austrian Grand Prix, with the next race coming quickly at the British Grand Prix at Silverstone on July 7.
[bsa_pro_ad_space id=41]Daniel Ricciardo
It was a tough race, and I think we were a bit more on the defensive side, so it took a lot of concentration and effort. I had a good start on the outside and was looking good, but then I lost a couple of positions as there was no more room, and I had to go wide. Once we settled after the start of the race, I think we did well; the team did a good job with the strategy to secure the position over the Alpines, and then I feel like I drove a good defence against Fernando (Alonso) and then Pierre (Gasly) in the last stint. We made a nice step from Barcelona, and it’s been a better weekend, so I’m happy to bring home some points. Now we’ll try to make another good step forward for Silverstone, and then maybe that will put us in another fight for points.
Yuki Tsunoda
The race started well. After the start, I was behind Alpine and Daniel, but by the third stint, I was way behind. The pace was off, and we’ll have to find out why. Daniel did a good job during today’s race, so in the end, we had a good conclusion. We seem to understand more about what direction we as a team have to take for the coming races, so that’s a positive.
Laurent Mekies – Team Principal
In the few days since Barcelona, everyone at the factory and the track has been working hard to extend our understanding of the updates we introduced in Spain as part of our aggressive development programme. That work continued here during the only Free Practice session while Sprint also provided us with valuable data. It is never ideal to compare specifications during a Sprint weekend, but we felt it was a necessary investment for our midterm future. The team and drivers did a great job putting together the best configuration possible for Saturday and Sunday. We are bringing home two good points, with Daniel finishing in P9 after an intense battle today and following yesterday’s strong qualifying, which saw us finishing at less than two hundredths from Q3. Yuki was only a fraction behind in qualifying and the race, but with the midfield battle being as tight as ever, it was enough for him to fall outside the points today. Once again, we only have a couple of days before we are back on track, this time at Silverstone, which is not far from our UK-based headquarters. The smallest pace difference can make you go from a points finish to the back of the grid, so everyone at the factory will be flat out to pursue our car development programme further.
Haas F1 Team
MoneyGram Haas F1 Team scored double points finish with Nico Hulkenberg sixth and Kevin Magnussen eighth at the 2024 Formula 1 Austrian Grand Prix, Round 11 of the FIA Formula 1 World Championship, held Sunday at the Red Bull Ring.
Sixth and eighth marks MoneyGram Haas F1 Team’s strongest result of the year and lifts the team up to seventh place in the Constructors’ Championship, on 19 points.
Kevin Magnussen
Ayao Komatsu, Team Principal
I’m just so happy for everyone on the team. Sometimes, we get unlucky, but today, our execution was amazing. Nico and Kevin drove well, and the pit stops were good. Everything was great. I’m speechless. I’m so happy that everyone got this result and that Nico beat Perez on merit. That’s a huge statement.
Williams Racing
The 2024 Formula 1 Austrian Grand Prix delivered a dramatic finish, but we could not benefit and ended P15 and P19.
[bsa_pro_ad_space id=41]Alex Albon
I believe P12 or P13 was possible today. I know it’s not points, but I don’t like finishing behind where I think we could’ve finished. With the pit stops, I lost a lot of time, either fighting with cars, boxing straight afterwards or coming out into dirty air. I don’t think it was easy out there with it being a short track and pit stops being a bit trickier, and I know it was my fault for crossing the line, but it’s just frustrating. We do have some learnings from this weekend that we can take to Silverstone, however there are still some questions as I didn’t expect us to be lacking in performance this much. Hopefully, we won’t suffer the same problems next week and can return stronger.
Logan Sargeant
Sven Smeets, Sporting Director:
It was a tough day for both drivers, firstly with Logan making contact on the first lap, requiring him to pit for a new front wing, and Alex struggling to get good track position and clean air, impacting his ability to fight through the field. We also knew today, with the high temperatures, was going to be a tyre management challenge. It’s been a tough two weekends for the team, last time out in Barcelona and Austria. However, we will look to take what we learned from this weekend and come back stronger next weekend for our home Grand Prix at Silverstone.
Alpine Racing
Esteban started from P10 on New Mediums and finished P12: Pit Stops on Lap 19 for New Hards and Lap 43 for New Mediums. Fastest Lap: 1min 09.649secs. Pierre started from P13 on New Mediums and finished P10: Pit Stops on Lap 20 for New Hards, Lap 42 for New Mediums. Fastest Lap: 1min 09.609secs.
[bsa_pro_ad_space id=41]Esteban Ocon
Today was a tough race, and we ended up outside the points. We had a strong start, which we needed, as we managed to pass Nico [Hülkenberg] on the opening lap. He did get by a few laps later, but we stayed right with him during the first stint, and from there, it would be a strategy race. We were not quick enough to fight for position and fell back into traffic after our pit stops. We had a better pace earlier in the weekend, so we will review everything in detail to improve next time. We finish off the triple header in Silverstone next weekend, so hopefully, it will be a strong Sunday showing for us at a legendary circuit.
Pierre Gasly
That’s four points-scoring finishes in a row and my 400th career point in Formula 1. In that sense, it’s been a satisfying day but a race I am sure we will review in detail to improve on a few things. We were always in the fight for points. I did not have a great start, but we did our best to recover after that. I think the two Haas cars were slightly quicker than us, and, in the end, I was in a close one with Daniel [Ricciardo], but it was tough as it was just a DRS train. We will settle for a point, four in a row now, which does show we are building consistency across different circuits. We continue to be more confident in our package, and it’s good for motivation to keep pushing and adding performance to the car. We will take it race by race and focus on ourselves. I’m thrilled with the current trajectory. Next one, Silverstone!

We scored one point today after a hard-fought Austrian Grand Prix. While it means we continue our points-scoring run, we leave Spielberg with plenty of things to review and improve for next time. We probably could have maximised our performance level, which meant our direct rivals capitalised and scored valuable points. We immediately have Silverstone to focus on next weekend, and we look forward to finishing this triple header at Enstone’s home race.
Kick Sauber F1 Team
Stake F1 Team KICK Sauber fought through a hot afternoon at the 2024 Formula 1 Austrian Grand Prix, with Valtteri Bottas and Zhou Guanyu coming to the chequered flag unscathed but outside the points. Despite the team showing an improved turn of pace compared to yesterday’s sprint, the team duo finished in 16th and 17th place, respectively.

Despite everything, I think this race has been our best session this weekend; there wasn’t much action where I was, but pace-wise, it felt a bit better than in the Sprint, which allowed us to be slightly closer to our main competitors. We also managed to keep the tyres in a much better window, which surely helped, although they are still quite sensitive to overheating in these temperatures. We still need to find that extra boost for Silverstone: of course, we’re not just after a short-term fix, but it’s good to see that gaps remain small. I think the direction is clear; we need to move forward with introducing new parts, as we have seen the difference they have been making for the other teams. Looking at Silverstone on a different track layout, I reckon there should be opportunities for us: what will be important is to be at the top of our game to make the most of them.
Zhou Guanyu
It’s been a tricky weekend for us, with a rather uneventful race for me today. Due to some set-up changes that took us in a different direction, I had to start today’s race from the pit lane. Unfortunately, we lacked the pace to make up more positions, and it seems our tyres are overheating quicker than our competitors – even if we managed that better today. We know our weaknesses and must work hard as a team – trackside and back in Hinwil – to improve our one-lap and race pace. It’s the last stop of the triple header next week, and there is no time to rest as we look ahead to next weekend. It’s not uncommon to experience varying performances on different tracks, so I hope we’ll be closer to the fight for points again in Silverstone.

We knew our starting positions would likely compromise our eventual classification unless any special circumstance outside of our control would intervene; indeed, we couldn’t make up much ground. Still, we can take some positives from today’s race, in particular in comparison to yesterday’s Sprint: we did a much better job at managing our tyres, and we controlled the overheating on both axles better, which was a massive issue in the Sprint. We were consistent with both the medium and hard compounds, and when it came to pace, we were not far from rivals like Aston Martin, Williams and Tsunoda. Of course, there’s still a lot of work to do to recover the gap and fight for points, but today was a small step in the right direction. The changes we made to Zhou’s car, which meant he started from the pit lane, made him more comfortable, while Valtteri was closer to Stroll, Tsunoda and Albon from lap one. In terms of strategy, we split the cars to make use of all new sets of tyres available, and, considering our starting positions, that was the best decision.
We started on hards with Zhou and were able to extend his second stint on mediums to give him a more consistent pace. With Valtteri, we wanted to extend the first stint on mediums as much as possible so as not to compromise the remaining two on hards. We eventually reached our targets this afternoon: we know these are just marginal ones, but the team must continue thinking that if we push altogether and are aggressive and able to do more in every area, we can get to the points. It’s not time to give up, but to react like we did between yesterday and today. We saw our competitors score points, especially Haas, and that’s not ideal for our championship fight, but that shows that if we can find more performance starting from the next race in Silverstone, there will be opportunities to be seized in the remaining races.
