McLaren Racing

Hear from McLaren Formula 1 drivers Lando Norris, Oscar Piastri, and Team Principal Andrea Stella after the 2024 Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix.

Lando and Oscar hold P1 and P2 through the first chicane. Oscar leads the second chicane, and Lando drops back to P3 behind Leclerc. Lando boxes for the Hard tyre on lap 14 coming out behind Ocon, but he quickly clears the Alpine. Leclerc responds to Lando’s pitting, but the undercut has been successful; position gained. Oscar pits on lap 16 for Hard tyres and comes out ahead of Lando. Sainz pits from the front, Oscar and Lando are now P3 and P4, with the two Red Bulls who have yet to pit ahead. Both Red Bulls pit, and it’s a Papaya 1-2 once more. Lando boxes for a fresh set of Hard tyres and is on his way again. Oscar follows suit and takes on another Hard tyre in P3 ahead of Verstappen and Lando. Lando moves ahead of Verstappen and into P4. Oscar quickly gets on Sainz’s gearbox before making the move into P2. Lando now moves ahead of Sainz and into P3. Leclerc is the first to see the chequered flag with Oscar and Lando in P2 and P3.

Lando Norris

A frustrating day on track. Ferrari drove a better race today, so hats off to them; they had a better car. Well done to Oscar, he did a good job getting past me, and deserved to finish ahead. We considered the one-stop race, but it wasn’t possible with the amount of graining I had. We knew it would be tight, and we were disappointed with the end result, but we’ll go again to Baku.

Oscar Piastri

There were some great points for the team, especially with Lando’s win, but it was a little bit disappointing on my side. I made some excellent progress, but I got stuck in the dirty air behind the Ferrari, which had more pace than we were expecting, so I couldn’t maximise the points on my side. However, we’ve got a quick car, so the next part of the season will be pretty fun.

I am looking forward to it.

Andrea Stella

A very close race with Ferrari. Leclerc was very quick today, and he won the race by executing a one-stop, while we felt that we needed to go on two stops to ensure we had enough tyres to make it to the end of the race. This meant that we couldn’t capitalise on our very strong position on the grid.

Apart from this, it’s been a very positive weekend in Monza. It confirmed that the car is strong and performs well on all kinds of circuits after the upgrades in Zandvoort, and we gained many points in the Constructors’ Championship and some points in the quest for Lando in the Drivers’ Championship. So, with this championship situation and the car’s performance, we look forward to an exciting final part of the season.
