Born in Torquay, UK, Hywel’s passion for motorsport began early. He grew up glued to the TV, watching Grands Prix and dreaming of the high-speed world of F1.

After earning a Mechanical Engineering degree from Bath University in 1995, Hywel launched his career at Perkins Engines as a Graduate Engineer. His talent quickly propelled him into a Simulation Engineer role, sharpening his technical skills and deepening his understanding of engine performance.

Hywel’s journey continued at Cosworth Racing, where he worked as a Design Engineer before joining Mercedes-Ilmor (now Mercedes AMG HPP) in 2004. Starting as a Senior Design Engineer, he steadily climbed the ranks, serving as Head of Mechanical Engineering and later as Engineering Director.

In 2015, he became Chief Engineer, and by 2019, he was leading the development of the cutting-edge Formula One Power Unit as F1 Power Unit Director. His leadership and technical expertise culminated in his appointment as Managing Director in June 2020, where he now oversees the ongoing evolution of the Hybrid Power Unit.

What drives Hywel? “It’s the people,” he says. “The passion and dedication throughout the organisation are extraordinary. We’re always pushing boundaries—never settling for the status quo. The team’s ability to evolve and adapt constantly amazes me.”

Under Hywel’s guidance and with the support of the brilliant minds at Brixworth, Mercedes AMG HPP played a pivotal role in securing eight consecutive FIA Formula One Constructors’ Championships with the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One Team.

Hywel Thomas embodies the spirit of relentless innovation and teamwork that defines Mercedes’ dominance in Formula One. His story is not just about career progression—it’s about leading a legacy of excellence in one of the world’s most demanding and thrilling sports.
