Charity Box: Leg it!

Charity run

Charity run

RunThatTrack is a very interesting concept, focusing on Formula 1, charity and, well, running.

The concept was conceived over a few drinks at a bar during the 2009 Formula 1 season. Several events and bars later the idea had fully taken hold and grown into a world of its own. The idea was simple, take the simply peaceful and individual activity of running around the racetracks to a ridiculously crazy and completely over the top Formula 1 level, where competition and performance could be scrutinised and analysed (and strange conclusions drawn) by people who really should be doing other things.

Originally developed as a bit of a prank, the popularity soon took off throughout 2010 and the site soon developed characters and a personality of its own. MKL and the French Mafia have entered into the minds of everyone attempting to do a lap, but still, nobody really seems to have understood that it is all just a bit of fun!

For 2011, the new season saw a new website with UBS joining the site as the “Official Charity Partner”. With help of UBS, a whole new charitable side of the site developed, and due to the support and drive of UBS the site grew in both popularity and members, but more importantly, US$192,100 was raised thanks to UBS and donated to the Make-A-Wish foundation.

For 2012 the tradition carried on in the full Formula 1 style with a launch of a new website with UBS once again onboard as the “Official Charity Partner”. With the help of UBS, the site continued to grow, with the popularity of the Group Run events reaching a new high. 2012 saw the introduction of the TrackMap, MKL’s Track Guide and the special RunThatTrack Podcast Mix by Dejan Dj. During the 2012 season, US$290,000 was raised again thanks to UBS and donated to Make-A-Wish.

Winter testing 2013 saw yet another new site being developed (this is Formula 1 after all) with the introduction of the UBS “Until the Race is Won” cup, a new way for everybody to compete and help raise the donation total for Make-A-Wish. 2013 also saw the introduction of the Make-A-Wish spotlight showing examples of some of the great wishes that Make-A-Wish grants each event. Again with the support of UBS, 2013 was the biggest season ever, over 5,000 laps were run (that’s over 28,000km) and $380,000 was raised and donated.

2014 sees the site continue to grow, with a new site launched at the Australian GP. UBS will continue their support and once again, all the funds raised through the site will go to Make-A-Wish.

“UBS is proud to be a Global Partner of Formula 1 and we feel it is important to support the communities in which we are present. RunThatTrack is an inspiring part of the Formula 1 way of life and we are happy to associate ourselves with it”, says Björn Wäspe, Head of Global Sponsorship at UBS.
