Lewis Hamilton took on a rival of a different kind yesterday, swapping the tarmac for the canvas of a wrestling ring. The new Formula 1 prince appeared at the Arena Mexico to face an opponent laced in grease and leather at the spiritual home of Lucha Libre:
He’s already slammed his rivals on the circuits, claiming a second successive crown in Austin on Sunday, but in the Arena Mexico Hamilton tag-teamed his way to victory in a Lucha libre contest.
He even took down professional opponent Mistico with an impressive cross-body slam and the world champion gave his opponent a thorough going-over with two kicks to the midriff – you can see the best images from the fight above.
His tag-team partner Mephisto was clearly impressed, hoisting the triple world champion on his shoulders to celebrate another victory for the 30-year-old.
I can’t believe it. I’m a three times world champion!
Hamilton received a warm welcome from the crowd and was greeted into the ring by a traditional Mariachi band and Hamilton joined in with the group on guitar, as if there wasn’t enough already that he is great at.
Hamilton admitted that he hasn’t quite got over the excitement of last week’s championship win ahead of the 17th Grand Prix of the season.
“Every day I am waking up and I’m like, ‘I can’t believe it. I’m a three times world champion,’” he said.
“I don’t know when it’s going to kick in but I’m definitely enjoying it. When people tell me three, I have them repeat it because it sounds really cool.”
