What was your very first experience of motor racing?
My father and I were taken to the racetrack by a family friend and we fell in love with the sport. From there, we found out about karting and ever since I’ve spent as much time behind the wheel as I can! There is no better feeling than competing and pushing oneself to improve and become the best.
What’s your recipe for finding sponsors?
My main focus as we search for sponsors is finding companies that align well with my taste and values. We’ve been very successful in finding partners that are able to produce an excellent return through the experience they have with us and the connections they make with us at the races. We put a lot of time and effort into making sure that the experience each of our guests receives is truly something that money alone cannot buy.
Once on track, the competition portion is easy because every moment in the car continues to build your experience.
How do you deal with the competition on the track?
Since I started racing at 12 years old, the pressure has certainly increased, but it is something that I’ve grown accustomed to. Despite the large group of supporters we often have with us and the high level of pressure that comes with that, I find that I’m able to deal with the pressure by focusing on making sure I have all the little details handled ahead of time. Before each session, I go through my helmet; checking the visor strips, layout my racing suit, gloves, fireproof socks, etc. When it’s my turn to get ready and jump behind the wheel, I feel completely under control as I go through a little warm-up and get my kit on. Once on track, the competition portion is easy because every moment in the car continues to build your experience and your understanding of where the limit is and apply that again and again.
What are your most important career highlights?
The most memorable moment for me certainly is winning the LMPC class at the 2017 ROLEX 24 Hours of Daytona. This was such a special day that we had worked so hard to make possible and despite coming together quite late no one made any mistakes. My family was there to be part of it, and so were so many of our partners that it felt great to give something back. My first big result in cars came in 2005 with Cape Motorsports in Cooper Tires Pro US F2000 Championship where I scored a podium on a wet and then drying Virginia International Raceway track. My first podium, in National karting in the super-competitive ICA class (now KF), was very special too at a racetrack in Utah. Finally, this year’s running of the ROLEX 24 was special in many ways as well. It marked my second time racing in the premier class of IMSA and also a huge opportunity moment to race against so many of my childhood heroes in one of the world’s biggest endurance classics.
