Rob Marshall became part of McLaren Racing in January 2024, bringing with him a wealth of experience from a stellar 17-year career at Red Bull Racing. Now working alongside Team Principal Andrea Stella as part of McLaren’s Formula 1 Technical Executive team, Rob is expected to play a key role in the design and development of McLaren’s next-generation F1 cars. Neil Houldey, Technical Director of Engineering, is supporting him in this mission.
Rob’s journey to the pinnacle of motorsport began at Cardiff University, where he studied Mechanical Engineering. After graduating in 1989, he joined the design department at Rolls-Royce, where he spent nine years working in aerospace — an industry known for its precision and innovation.
In 1999, Rob made the leap to Formula 1, joining Benetton Formula as a Design Engineer. When Renault later acquired the team, Rob rose through the ranks to become Head of Mechanical Design. His leadership and engineering skills contributed directly to Renault’s historic double championship victories in 2005 and 2006, securing both Drivers’ and Constructors’ titles.
In 2006, Rob moved to Red Bull Racing as Chief Designer. He was later promoted to Chief Engineering Officer in 2016. During his time at Red Bull, he helped develop several title-winning cars, including four consecutive championships with Sebastian Vettel (2010–2013) and three more with Max Verstappen (2021–2023). His designs were critical in shaping some of the most dominant machines in modern F1 history.
Now at McLaren, Rob brings his deep technical expertise and a winning mindset. His arrival marks a significant step in McLaren’s ambition to close the performance gap with the top teams and consistently challenge at the front of the grid.
With Rob Marshall and Neil Houldey at the helm of car development, McLaren is poised to enter an exciting new chapter — one powered by experience, innovation, and the relentless pursuit of performance.
