Benedetto Vigna, the Chief Executive Officer of Ferrari since September 1, 2021, is not just a seasoned business leader but also an Italian physicist with a rich blend of technological expertise. His unique combination of skills instils confidence in his ability to lead the iconic automotive brand into the future.

Born on April 10, 1969, in Potenza, Italy, Vigna graduated cum laude in subnuclear physics from the University of Pisa in 1993. His professional journey began in 1995 with STMicroelectronics (ST), where he played a pioneering role in initiating the company’s work in microelectromechanical systems (MEMS). His innovative efforts helped establish ST’s leadership in motion-activated user interfaces, with his inventions influencing technologies ranging from automotive airbags to the wireless controls of the Nintendo Wii.

Over his 26-year tenure at ST, Vigna rose to become President of the Analog, MEMS, and Sensors Group—ST’s largest and most profitable division in 2020. He was also a member of ST’s Executive Committee. Under his leadership, the company expanded into areas such as connectivity, imaging, and power solutions, particularly targeting industrial and automotive markets. He has authored numerous publications, registered more than 200 patents, and served on boards of EU-funded programs, start-ups, and renowned research centres in Asia and the Americas.

One of his most celebrated achievements was the invention of a 3D motion sensor, initially developed for automotive safety systems and later adapted for consumer electronics. For this innovation, the European Patent Organisation named him a finalist for the European Inventor Award in 2010.
