What was your very first experience of motor racing?

I can’t guarantee that this is completely accurate, as far as my memory can take me it would playing around on rental karts as a very young kid, potentially 7 years old.  My first experience of competing in the sport was in karting at club level aged 8.

How did you finance your early years?

My karting days were funded by family and friends. As you move into cars, options are increased for generating budget as there is much more to offer from the car racing world.

One of the biggest challenges for every driver is to attract sponsorship. What is your recipe for success?

I think there are multiple recipes, if you have one major backer or sponsor that supports you all the way, that’s extremely fortunate. I can only speak from my experience and I’ve learnt so much from it, generating money from investors and sponsors takes a team of people that give a clear strategy on how we will generate the money and how it can be delivered. First of all, you need a target, mine is Le Mans so therefore we know what we are aiming for. You most likely won’t raise the money overnight, there’s a timeline on what’s achievable and once you get traction with the investment you can see what’s possible. It’s not easy, anyone in the world who’s trying to get money for investment in them or a company will hit low and high times achieving it.

How do you deal with the competition on the track?

I’ve always put myself in the deep end of the competition in the sport, the only year that I was a challenger for a title was 2014 in the BRDC F4 series. The reason I was a contender right up until the final race was that it was my second year in it and I had experienced in the car, anything else I’ve ever driven I’ve only done a single year in it to keep progressing forward and learning rather than going for a title. I’m relishing Blancpain because it’s one of the most competitive championships, I never want the competition to be anything less than that.

What are your most important career highlights?

My first podium in Ginetta in my rookie season at Snetterton was good, my first win in my rookie season in single-seaters I think was more important as it was round 3 of the 2013 BRDC Formula 4 championship and that made me realise I could challenge for podiums for the remainder of the year. The 2014 season was great, I was able to get 8 podiums in BRDC F4, and get the record for most places gained in a race which was from p22 to p3 at Silverstone. This is my most significant year so far with McLaren GT in the driver academy, we’ve shown that we can challenge inside the top 10 only 2 rounds in. I’m looking to grow into this team and learn from the specialised employees and professional drivers it has working for them. I believe they will give me the package to fight for wins and championships every year as I develop as a driver.
